Molten Lava Cake

Hunan is a hidden away place on New BEL Road. It’s an easy miss but if you do find it — it’s a definite MUST TRY. Chinese and Pan Asian Cuisine is what they specialize in.

The Ambience is very nice and plush, nice seating near a big window — only problem is the scenery out the window is not really the best so I think it’s better to be happy with just the great light that comes through. The staff is excellent as they are very attentive and will also help out with suggestions and they look into details so a 10 on 10 for the staff.

It was a lunch date with my husband and a quick one and they did serve quickly so we were in and out in a jiffy and I do appreciate that.

Now on to the food -

For the Starters we got Sweet Corn Chicken Soup and Chicken Lollipop. Now I am very grateful to the one who was taking the order as I was thinking lollipop but actually saying Drums of Heaven. He quickly confirmed by saying that drums of heaven is deep fried and with batter when I said — Oh, that’s not the one and then he corrected me by saying lollipop maybe. I beamed and agreed. So he did save the day as I would have been thoroughly disappointed if i have a deep fried battered chicken on my table as a starter which I would not touch.

The Sweet Corn Soup was just as I think it must be — the flavors well balanced with sweet and sour and the corn was crisp and the consistency of the soup nice and silky.

The Chicken Lollipop was not the best and I have had better. I thought the spice mix tasted a bit undone and also would have preferred a little more spice in it. I have had lollipops that have a zing which this one did not. Though I will rate this as a good dish however, I have had better.

For the Mains,

I asked for the Seafood Sizzler and my husband ordered Jasmine Rice with Chicken Thai Red Curry.

The Thai Red Curry was with chicken and herbs like lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves served with jasmine Rice. It was a nice yummy coconutty thai red curry with the perfect mix of flavors and the chicken was cooked to perfection. The curry for my husband was a bit mild with regards to how spicy he would like it but I think it is very close to the traditional way of how the curry is made. The way it was served and plated was also very appealing and the dish overall is a very well balanced and flavorful dish.

The Seafood Sizzler was an interesting mix of fish, prawns and squids in a thick oyster gravy and served with fried rice. They also served nicely sautéed vegetables and I really loved them — so fresh and crisp and with a bite to them which really made my day. I like my veggies and have always enjoyed this style of making the veggies. The gravy with the seafood was also well done and I really enjoyed the sizzler. It is a dish in itself and a very good one.

Finally the dessert that we ordered was a molten lava cake. Now this was the disaster of the day. It is the worst molten cake I have seen in my life and it also tasted and looked weird. I of course did not go through with it and would request that they take it off the menu. I left feeling disappointed as they are really doing a good platter with Pan Asian but the dessert spoils it all. Maybe I chose the wrong dish but to get it so wrong is not acceptable.

I will rate these guys 3.5 out of 5 for the food, they would have def got a 4 or more from me if the dessert was not so bad. All in all a very good experience except for the dessert and a must visit for their Pan Asian and Chinese cuisine. Also, with the expansive menu tehy have it is definitely a must visit for more than one time.
